The volume of a box can be determined by using this applet to manipulate and enumerate unit cubes, rows of unit cubes, or layers of unit cubes.

Add cubes, rows or layers to the inside of the box by clicking on the button with the picture of the appropriate shape. You can undo a choice by clicking on the Remove Last button. Or you can start over by pressing the Clear button.

You can see what the sides of the box look like when they are folded in position to make the box by clicking on a side; click again to fold the side to its original position.

You can adjust the size of the box by changing the width, depth, or height fields and then clicking on the Change Box button.
